Research Scientist 4 (Analytical Chemistry) Vacancy ID 172494[8]
Applications due 11/25/24
The Wadsworth Center’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) is comprised of organic, inorganic and microbiological laboratories where skilled staff are relied upon to analyze environmental samples and human specimens, to identify and quantitate chemical contaminants that are known or suspected to be hazardous to public health. Within DEHS, the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry (LOAC) is a fully accredited laboratory, where staff support public health testing of organic chemical threats such as perfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water, pesticides in cannabis products, and polychlorinated biphenyls in human tissues, to name a few.
We solicit an expert in ultra-trace analysis of organic chemicals in human tissues and environmental samples using gas chromatography/liquid chromatography interfaced with mass spectrometers. The incumbent is expected to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, in the area of human biomonitoring, especially in effect biomarker analysis, as well as in developing the capability for untargeted analysis using high resolution mass spectrometers such as Orbitrap instrument available in the LOAC. Ability to perform targeted and untargeted analysis of environmental chemicals using mass spectrometers and development of novel analytical methods for discovery-oriented research is required.
The incumbent will also manage and supervise existing public health programs in regulated lab settings while training junior staff, in applying mass spectral data to advance public health science. This incumbent is expected to apply/co-apply for research grants and manage deliverables of research grants awarded to the LOAC. Extensive experience in maintenance, operation and troubleshooting of mass spectrometers as well as interpretation of mass spectral data is required. Participation in proficiency testing programs, writing standard operating procedures and research publications as well as applying for CLIA/CLEP certifications are expected of this position.
