Research Interests

As a member of the Bioinformatics Core, I am actively working on a multitude of projects, both research and clinical, involving whole genome and targeted sequencing of clinical pathogens. My specific area of expertise is centered on bacterial genomics, evolution and phylogeny. My work and interest in genomics started in the early days of complete genome sequencing, trying to comprehend how genomes evolve and change over time.

At the Wadsworth Center, my research focuses on using next generation sequencing technologies for clinical diagnostics and surveillance.  In collaboration with the Bacteriology Laboratory, we are working on implementing new methodologies that will lead to more comprehensive and rapid diagnostics of tuberculosis infections as well as their associated antimicrobial resistance. We are also actively pursuing new protocols such as nanopore sequencing and detection of pathogens directly from clinical samples for surveillance and outbreak management.
