The aim of the program is to prepare laboratory scientists for diagnostic, investigative, and leadership careers in public health. A broad range of scientific expertise is offered to the Fellows. Fellows can learn state-of-the-art diagnostic microbiology; participate in protocol development and research in infectious diseases, newborn screening, translational medicine and environmental health. The Fellow will gain experience in a given laboratory to learn how to perform specific research techniques and/or diagnostic tests within the framework of the laboratory’s day-to-day operation and within the framework of special programs managed by the laboratory.
Upon completing the program, it is expected that Fellows will have:
- A general understanding of biomedical and public health sciences
- A comprehensive understanding of his/her area of specialty
- Exposure to state-of-the-art laboratory techniques
- An understanding of how to evaluate clinical tests
- A working knowledge of quality assurance/quality control principles
- Appreciation of the importance of laboratory safety and security
- An understanding of epidemiological principles and the interactions between epidemiologists and public health laboratories
- Opportunities to learn about and practice scientific communication
- Awareness of the regulatory roles of the Wadsworth Center
- Training on research ethics
