A specialty care center is a health care facility established under Article 28 of the NYS Public Health Law which is approved by the Department of Health and certified by the Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research to provide treatment and/or services to children identified by the newborn screening laboratory.
Specialty Care Centers are required to meet a set of criteria to be considered qualified to diagnose and treat one or a group of disorders screened for in the newborn screening test panel. Interested healthcare providers complete an application which details the qualifications of staff and demonstrates the appropriate resources are available at their facility. The Newborn Screening Program reviews the application and arranges for a site visit which is also required for certification.
Questions about the certification process can be directed via email.
